LATAM Airlines has expressed interest in leasing Boeing aircraft previously owned by GOL Linhas Aéreas, the second-largest airline in Brazil. GOL recently filed for bankruptcy in the United States, prompting LATAM to explore potential arrangements for 20 to 25 Boeing 737s, addressing the heightened demand for air travel.
GOL, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, is a major player in the Brazilian and Latin American aviation landscape, commanding 37% of the domestic Brazilian market and 15% of the international market. Since its establishment in 2000, the airline has transported 50 million passengers and strategically expanded its regional presence, serving destinations in Argentina, Peru, and Chile.
In addition to its headquarters at São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport, GOL has key hubs in cities like Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Salvador, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, and Curitiba. The airline is even establishing a hub in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, marking its only hub outside Brazil. GOL also has a strategic cooperation agreement with Air France-KLM for flights between South America and Europe.
