Qatar Airways is currently in discussions with aerospace giants Boeing and Airbus for the acquisition of up to 150 widebody jets, aiming to revitalize and expand its long-haul fleet to meet evolving market demands.
According to Bloomberg's report, sources familiar with the matter revealed that Qatar Airways intends to procure between 100 to 150 new widebody aircraft, reflecting the company's strategic initiative to bolster its fleet size and enhance operational efficiency.
The airline has initiated the process by soliciting proposals from both Boeing and Airbus, with plans to finalize the agreements in the coming months. Although specific models have not been confirmed, the order is anticipated to include fuel-efficient options such as the Airbus A350 or Boeing 777X.
Badr Mohammed Al Meer, CEO, Qatar Airways, emphasized the company's proactive approach, stating during a CNBC interview, "We are in constant dialogue with our customers, but we never comment on the confidential content of our talks." Both Boeing and Airbus refrained from offering detailed comments.
This potential order follows recent developments for both manufacturers. Qatar Airways announced the full restoration of its A350 fleet, resolving a legal dispute with Airbus over surface damage, while Boeing's 777X program, despite garnering significant orders worldwide, faces persistent delays.
Additionally, Qatar Airways is crafting its inaugural First Class concept. Al Meer envisions this as a fusion of commercial and private jet experiences, nearing completion at 70% to 80%. The airline is also revamping its premium Q-Suite class, set to unveil the latest iteration at the Farnborough International Airshow in July.
