Volaris, a Mexican low-cost airline, and Iberia, a Spanish airline owned by the IAG group, have signed a codeshare agreement to enhance connectivity between Europe and Mexico via Mexico City. The agreement, subject to regulatory approval from both countries, is expected to be operational by July.

Enrique Beltranena, CEO, Volaris, announced the partnership on his social media, emphasizing the goal to "expand connectivity between Europe and Mexico." This marks the first codeshare agreement for Volaris with a European airline.

The codeshare agreement allows both airlines to sell seats on each other's flights, thereby offering a broader range of destinations to passengers. “By signing this codeshare agreement with Iberia, we are providing passengers with a greater variety of options to explore Mexico. This alliance will extend connectivity via Mexico City, reaching 25 domestic destinations within our network,” said Holger Blankenstein, Executive President, Volaris.

The destinations covered under this agreement via Mexico City include Acapulco, Cancun, Chetumal, Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, Cozumel, Culiacan, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Huatulco, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, La Paz, Los Mochis, Mazatlan, Merida, Mexicali, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Escondido, San Jose del Cabo, Tapachula, Tijuana, Tuxtla Gutierrez, and Villahermosa.

Maria Jesus Lopez Solas, Iberia’s Director of Clients, Network Development, and Alliances, highlighted the enhanced connectivity as a perfect complement to Iberia’s record capacity deployed this year. She stated, “With this collaboration agreement, we reaffirm our commitment to Mexico, one of our main markets. Thanks to it, we offer better connectivity to all customers traveling to Mexico with Iberia, while also facilitating travel for Mexican passengers to Europe in a more comfortable and efficient manner.”

Currently, Iberia operates three daily flights to Mexico City, providing over 772,000 seats annually, a 17% increase compared to 2019 figures. These flights are operated entirely with A350 aircraft, the largest and most eco-efficient in Iberia’s fleet, with a capacity of 348 passengers.
