FAO shared strategies to advance climate action in agriculture during the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week, held in Panama. The agency participated in technical sessions focused on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans, where it presented tools to strengthen climate efforts in the agricultural sector. A key highlight was the work of the Platform for Climate Action in Agriculture (PLACA), which FAO identified as a central mechanism for regional coordination ahead of COP30.

María Mercedes, Climate Finance Officer, FAO, said PLACA has trained more than 2,000 officials from agriculture ministries and reached over 45,000 professionals through its programs. “This platform has positioned itself as a key tool for regional coordination toward COP30,” she said.

Proaño emphasized the need to mobilize financial resources to implement transformative actions. “We need innovative investments, strategic partnerships and public policies that effectively integrate adaptation and mitigation into our agrifood systems to achieve more ambitious climate goals,” she stated.

The technical discussions held in Panama are expected to inform upcoming climate negotiations, including the 62nd sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies in Bonn and COP30, scheduled to take place in Belem, Brazil, in 2025. Agriculture is expected to play a central role in these negotiations.
