The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) have successfully expanded their conservation efforts to protect over 95 million ha of the country's most significant ecosystems. This achievement results from the establishment of 44 new Protected Natural Areas (ANP) over the past six years and the designation of 595 Voluntarily Designated Conservation Areas (ADVC) across 28 states, supported by local ejidos, communities, and indigenous groups.

The recent additions include the community of Santa Maria Chimalapa, which contributed 334,878ha. This region, located in the narrowest part between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, is noted for its high biodiversity and natural resources and is home to the Zoque people.

Significant contributions also came from the establishment of ADVCs in the municipalities of Carmen, Champoton, Escárcega, and Calakmul. These areas support the Jaguar Biological Corridor (Baalam Beh), which promotes conservation-compatible activities for the jaguar and other flora and fauna.

Key new decrees include the creation of the Balam Kin Flora and Fauna Protection Area, the Balam Kú Biosphere Reserve, and the expanded Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche, forming the Gran Calakmul region, which spans over 1.5 million ha. The Lago de Texcoco Natural Resource Protection Area acknowledges the efforts of communities in eastern Mexico State, while the Jaguar Protection Area enhances biological connectivity with Tulum National Park. These protected areas play a critical role in providing water to 17 major cities and ensuring food security through 146 terrestrial ANPs that supply water to 57 of the 86 national irrigation districts.

The initiative also fosters community engagement by involving local and indigenous groups in environmental stewardship. CONANP, in collaboration with these communities and various sectors, safeguards over 95 million ha through ANPs and ADVCs.
