Mexico reaffirmed its status as the world’s second-largest producer and exporter of limes and lemons by the end of 2023, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER). Progressive growth in lime cultivation, strong phytosanitary reputation, and the dedication of Mexican producers enabled the country to meet high domestic and international demand throughout the year, with peak harvest volumes occurring from August to October.

Mexico accounted for 20.5% of global lime and lemon production, with an average annual growth rate of 8.4% from 2019 to 2023. During this period, the country exported an average of 749,000t annually, 98.7% of which went to three key markets: the United States, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Trade with the United States accounted for US$659 million, while the Netherlands and the United Kingdom contributed US$10 million and US$3 million, respectively. This performance positioned Mexico ahead of competitors such as South Africa, Turkey, and Brazil.

In 2023, exports reached US$838 million and 716,163t, marking increases of 10.6% in value and 2.7% in volume compared to 2022. National lime production also rose by 4.5% year-on-year, reaching 3.24Mt, with Michoacan leading production at over 953,000t. Other major producers included Veracruz, Colima, Oaxaca, and Tamaulipas.

Agricultural data also highlighted an increase in lime production in 2023, with 9,302t produced, representing a 0.9% rise from 2022. This growing output meets a seasonal demand surge, particularly in winter months, as consumers seek the fruit's immune system-boosting benefits.
