Michoacan Grapefruit Production Rises 10.4%
Michoacan’s grapefruit production rose by 10.4% during the first nine months of the year, totaling 71,871t, as reported by Mexico’s Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP). Production during the same period last year reached 65,059t. This increase places the state as the second-highest grapefruit-producer in Mexico, trailing only Veracruz.
Grapefruit is the second-most-produced citrus fruit in the state, after lime. Within Michoacan, the municipalities of Magica and Paracuaro lead in production, contributing 33,039t and 27,731t, respectively.
In 2024, more than 6,000ha were dedicated to grapefruit cultivation, a figure consistent with previous years. Last year, grapefruit harvests in the state were valued at over MX$391.8 million (US$19.3 million). Known for its quality and taste, Michoacan’s grapefruit has also achieved international recognition in countries including the Netherlands, Japan, France, and Saudi Arabia.
Despite the prominence of grapefruit, Mexico’s federal government’s recent Agronomic Strategic Plan for Citrus has focused primarily on lime production, aiming to protect it from organized crime interference. No specific measures have been detailed for the inclusion of grapefruit in this strategy.
