The Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Commission of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) approved the Model Law for the Promotion of Agroecology. Developed in close collaboration with FAO and supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and The Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), this legislation marks a significant step toward enhancing food security and sustainable development in the region.

The Model Law project was initiated in 2022 at the request of PARLATINO, with technical support from FAO, building upon the 2021 publication Legislating to Promote Agroecology in the Latin America and Caribbean Region. The development process included three public consultations in the Caribbean, Mesoamerica, and South America, engaging parliamentarians, civil society representatives, academia, social movements, and international organizations.

The formulation and advancement of the Agroecology Model Law underscore PARLATINO's commitment to strengthening existing legal frameworks and creating new instruments to promote improved production, nutrition, environmental quality, and livelihoods. By fostering food security in the region, supporting family farming, and driving the transformation of agri-food systems, PARLATINO aims to enhance agricultural sustainability and resilience.

Following approval by the Commission, the draft law will proceed to the general plenary of PARLATINO for final discussion and subsequent voting. The date for this session is yet to be confirmed.
