Shell, in collaboration with Espacios Naturales y Desarrollo Sustentable (ENDESU), announced the completion of the second phase of their oyster cultivation modernization project. This initiative introduces new technology for oyster production in the Mecoacán Lagoon located in Paraiso, Tabasco.
Working closely with ENDESU, Shell has embarked on a journey to test a novel oyster production technology in the Mecoacán Lagoon. This innovative approach employs floating Australian-style baskets, a technique that has demonstrated enhanced production efficiency and environmental sustainability when compared to traditional methods, such as the string and ring approach. As a significant development, two oyster cooperatives have undergone training in the application of this new technology, positioning them to take ownership of the process in the future. This transition promises to improve the economic prospects of cooperative members, enabling them to market oysters at premium prices.
ENDESU, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of natural resources in Mexico, plays a pivotal role in the implementation of this initiative. Aligned with Shell Mexico's social investment strategy, ENDESU is at the forefront of testing and validating the novel oyster production technology within the Mecoacán Lagoon.
The strides made regarding this project highlight the meaningful contributions of private entities within the oil and gas industry, as emphasized by the Mexican Association of Hydrocarbon Companies (AMEXHI). AMEXHI recognizes that endeavors like Shell and ENDESU's oyster cultivation modernization initiative extend beyond contractual commitments.
The adoption of innovative technologies in oyster cultivation not only boosts production efficiency but also aligns with the imperative of sustainable resource management. The Australian-style floating baskets method showcases the potential to minimize ecological impact while supporting economic growth in local communities.
AMEXHI has previously highlighted social contributions made by private companies from the oil and gas industry. “Contributing to the development of the more than 120 communities where the hydrocarbons industry operates in Mexico has become something more important than simply meeting a contractual requirement commitment: It is a mission that motivates AMEXHI members to leave a positive mark in the states where they have their areas of influence,” reads AMEXHI’s report.
