In a collaborative effort to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Mexico and promote environmental policies, leading automotive and charging companies have joined forces to establish the Electro Mobility Association (EMA). Comprising industry giants such as BYD, Evergo, JAC, SEV, Tesla, VEMO, and Volvo, the EMA aims to transform Mexico's automotive landscape towards complete electrification by 2035.

With over 40,275 electric vehicles and 32,175 chargers installed in Mexico, EMA's initial goal is to electrify major cities while raising public awareness and advocating for regulations facilitating mass adoption.

Acknowledging the country's lag in EV adoption compared to trading partners, EMA members pledge to increase their investments in Mexico to introduce new technologies. Shirley Wagner, President, EMA, will spearhead lobbying efforts with the government and private sector stakeholders to drive policies supporting this transition.

Inspired by successful counterparts like ZETA in the United States, Electric Mobility in Canada, and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), EMA focuses on promoting favorable regulations, electromobility education, and recharge infrastructure development.

Despite the current progress, challenges such as the lack of public charging infrastructure and consumer 'range anxiety' persist, prompting the association to address these issues through its initiatives.

Wagner emphasized the association's commitment to engaging with authorities, notably the Regulatory Energy Commission (CRE), to propel Mexico toward a future where 100% of vehicles sold in 2035 are fully electric. The EMA will coordinate efforts across the public, private, and social sectors, aiming to achieve a 50% share of annual electric vehicle sales by 2030.

The association proposes prioritizing electrification in major cities and high-usage vehicles, including those used by companies, taxis, mobility platforms, and public transportation. While acknowledging challenges such as technology unfamiliarity among consumers, Wagner stressed the necessity of educating consumers about the advantages of EVs while concurrently training personnel to address any issues or provide maintenance.
