General Motors will halt production of its GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant — known as Factory Zero — from Sept. 2 to Oct. 6, 2025. The temporary shutdown affects both shifts at the facility and about 160 of its 4,000 workers, as the company adjusts output to align with current market demand for EVs.

“These adjustments are being made to align production with market dynamics,” a GM spokesperson said. The two affected models — among GM’s most expensive and largest EVs — have seen declining demand, contrasting with stronger sales in the entry-level EV segment. The Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV are noted by the company as showing solid growth.

This marks the second production pause at Factory Zero this year. In April 2025, GM temporarily laid off 200 workers due to reduced sales of full-size electric trucks, including the GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV. The latest suspension continues the trend of adjusting EV production while maintaining the plant's role as a hub for GM’s flagship electric trucks and SUVs.

While reducing production of select electric models, GM is shifting resources to support both EV and internal combustion engine (ICE) strategies. The company plans to increase gasoline vehicle production in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee. These include gasoline-powered SUVs and pickups in Orion (Michigan) beginning in 2027, the Chevrolet Equinox in Fairfax (Kansas) starting this year, and the Chevy Blazer in Spring Hill (Tennessee) from 2027.

Additionally, GM will invest US$888 million in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant in New York to produce a new generation of V8 engines. Despite temporary adjustments at Factory Zero, the facility will continue as GM’s central site for electric production of the Hummer EV, Escalade IQ, Silverado EV, and Sierra EV.
