Renault announced the resignation of CEO Luca de Meo, effective July 15, 2025, signaling a significant leadership change for one of Europe’s key automakers. French daily Le Figaro reports that de Meo is expected to assume the role of CEO at luxury conglomerate Kering, succeeding François-Henri Pinault. Pinault has held the dual roles of chairman and CEO for two decades.

“After five years at the helm of Renault Group, Luca de Meo informed the board of his decision to step down to take on new challenges outside the automotive sector,” Renault said in a press release.

De Meo’s departure coincides with a broader reorganization of Kering’s leadership. A source close to the matter told Reuters that Pinault is actively preparing for succession by separating the roles of chairman and CEO and seeking new executive leadership. If confirmed, de Meo would step into the position as Kering faces mounting pressure to address declining performance at Gucci, its primary revenue driver.

Renault’s shares dropped over 5% after the announcement, while Kering’s stock gained more than 6% in early trading. Renault’s leadership transition also draws public attention, given the French government’s 15% stake in the company.

De Meo, an Italian national, joined Renault in 2020 after a successful tenure at Volkswagen Group, where he revitalized the SEAT brand. He previously led a resurgence of the Fiat 500 during his time at Fiat and began his career at Renault, making his 2020 return a full-circle moment.

During his time at Renault, de Meo oversaw a major restructuring initiative. The company implemented cost-cutting measures that reduced its workforce and global production capacity, aiming to make Renault more agile and competitive.

De Meo also prioritized electrification, expanding Renault’s hybrid lineup and accelerating its electric vehicle (EV) strategy. In its statement, Renault praised his contributions: “Luca de Meo transformed Renault during his tenure, making it a more resilient and focused company.”
