Saia LTL Freight has begun testing two Tesla Semi electric trucks in the United States as part of a collaboration with Tesla. This initiative aligns with Saia's commitment to sustainability and innovation within the transportation sector, and it coincides with the company’s centennial celebration, as Saia was founded in 1924.
The logistics and less-than-truckload (LTL) service company stated that integrating the Tesla Semi into its fleet is part of its strategy to adapt to changing market demands and improve operational efficiency. According to Saia, this test represents a step forward in the company's focus on technology and sustainability in the transportation industry.
During the initial tests of the Tesla Semis, the trucks demonstrated efficiency across different routes. Specifically, Saia reported an efficiency rate of 1.73kWh/mile during one of the early trials. Additionally, drivers noted the vehicle’s smooth acceleration, driver comfort, and the ability of the Tesla Semi to maintain a consistent speed on steep inclines, even when hauling heavy loads.
Patrick Sugar, Saia’s Executive Vice President of Operations, commented, according to TyT, that the collaboration with Tesla is part of the company's ongoing efforts to ensure its long-term position in a constantly evolving business environment. He added that this partnership reflects Saia’s approach to technological evolution and its commitment to maintaining a sustainable business model.
The test with the Tesla Semis is taking place at a time when Saia is focused on strengthening its foundation for the future as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. The company is not only evaluating the Tesla Semi’s performance in terms of energy efficiency and operational capabilities, but also its adaptability to various transportation applications, including both local and long-haul routes.
“Our partnership with Tesla underscores our commitment to evolution. At the same time, we remain true to the values that have guided us for the past century,” said Sugar.
