Uber Technologies has signed a six-year agreement with electric vehicle maker Lucid Group and autonomous driving developer Nuro to deploy more than 20,000 autonomous robotaxis globally. As part of the partnership, Uber will invest US$300 million in Lucid and make an undisclosed, multi-hundred-million-dollar investment in Nuro.
The jointly announced program will introduce a next-generation robotaxi fleet, exclusive to Uber’s platform. The first commercial launch is scheduled for 2026 in a major US metropolitan area.
The fleet will feature Lucid Gravity vehicles equipped with Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous driving system, known as the Nuro Driver. These vehicles will be operated by Uber or its third-party fleet partners. Testing of the first prototype is already underway at Nuro’s proving grounds in Las Vegas.
“This new robotaxi program is purpose-built just for the Uber platform to safely bring autonomous driving to more people across the world,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO, Uber.
Lucid Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff called the partnership aa strategic expansion into a new market. “This investment from Uber validates Lucid's fully redundant zonal architecture and highly capable platform as ideal for autonomous vehicles,” Winterhoff stated.
Nuro’s Co-Founder and CEO Jiajun Zhu emphasized the combination of technology and scalability as the key advantage of the project. “Nuro has spent nearly a decade building an AI-first autonomy system that’s safe, scalable, and vehicle-agnostic,” said Zhu.
