Lionsgate has entered into a partnership with Runway, an applied AI research company, to harness generative AI technology as an assistive tool for filmmakers. This collaboration marks Runway’s first deal with a Hollywood studio and aims to create a customized AI model tailored to Lionsgate’s extensive library of over 20,000 film and television titles.

The new AI model, developed by Runway, is designed to “generate cinematic video” to help filmmakers and directors enhance their creative processes. According to Lionsgate, this AI-generated content can be further refined using Runway’s suite of controllable tools, improving both pre-production and post-production workflows.

Lionsgate anticipates substantial financial savings from this partnership. CEO Jon Feltheimer noted, “We expect to save millions and millions of dollars” by incorporating Runway’s AI capabilities. We do a lot of action movies, so we blow a lot of things up, and that is one of the things Runway does.”

Runway, based in New York City, has garnered US$237 million in funding from notable investors, including Google and Nvidia. Co-founder and CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela emphasized the importance of technology in art, stating, “The history of art is the history of technology, and these new models are part of our continuous efforts to build transformative mediums for artistic and creative expression.”
