Sam Altman, CEO and Co-Founder, OpenAI, has been ousted from his position by the company board. The decision followed accusations against Altman for lacking “consistent candor in his communications,” which hindered the boards’ ability to exercise its responsibilities with efficiency. However, the specific details of what Altman may have concealed from the board remain undisclosed.

At 38, Altman has been at the forefront of efforts to create artificial general intelligence (AGI), an AI system capable of performing tasks equivalent to those achievable by humans. He played a pivotal role in the development of ChatGPT, a large language model that not only garnered over 100 million users within a year but also helped propel AI integration across multiple industries.

While Altman became a notable advocate for AI regulation in recent months, his departure from OpenAI has raised questions about the future direction of OpenAI, as individuals presume its departure was due to security discrepancies between Altman and the OpenAI board, according to TechCrunch. While the reasons behind Altman’s dismissal remain unclear, his departure did trigger the resignation of company President Greg Brockman and three additional OpenAI researchers: Jakub Pachocki, Aleksander Mądry, and Szymon Sidor.

After unsuccessful talks regarding a potential reinstatement, the OpenAI board decided to replace Altman with Emmett Shear as interim CEO. Despite the rumors, Shear stated that Altman had not been fired because of safety concerns. “The board did not remove Sam over any specific disagreement on safety; their reasoning was completely different from that. I am not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our awesome models,” stated Shear

Altman's exit took a toll on Microsoft's stocks, a key business partner of OpenAI. Still, the former company reassured its commitment to the partnership with OpenAI. “We have a long-term agreement with OpenAI ... Together, we will continue to deliver the meaningful benefits of this technology to the world," said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft.

Upon learning about Altman’s dismissal, Microsoft was quick in appointing Altman and OpenAI’s former president, Greg Brockman, to lead a new AI team at the tech company. “We are extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success,” wrote Nadella.

However, current OpenAI employees have expressed their dissatisfaction with Altman’s dismissal, threatening the company with their resignation. According to reports, 743 out of 770 OpenAI employees have signed a letter questioning the board’s competence and accusing it of undermining the company’s work. Among the OpenAI employees that signed the letter, chief scientist and board member, Ilya Sutskever, stands out. His unique position has triggered multiple criticisms from his fellow board members.

"Now I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company,” said Sustekever in a post on X.

This is a developing story. We will give updates as the situation unfolds.
