OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated experience designed to bring personal health information and AI  together in a secure environment, as demand for digital health guidance continues to grow.

Health-related questions are already among the most common uses of ChatGPT, with more than 230 million people worldwide asking health and wellness questions each week, according to OpenAI’s de-identified data. ChatGPT Health builds on that usage by allowing users to ground conversations in their own medical and wellness information, to help them better understand their health and prepare for interactions with the healthcare system.

The new experience operates as a separate space within ChatGPT, where health conversations, files, and connected applications are kept isolated from other chats. OpenAI says this structure is intended to address a common challenge for patients, whose health data is often spread across portals, apps, wearables, and documents, making it difficult to see patterns over time or prepare for medical decisions.

Users can choose to securely connect medical records and wellness apps so responses reflect their individual context. Available integrations include Apple Health and wellness platforms such as Function and MyFitnessPal, while access to US healthcare providers’ records is enabled through a partnership with b.well, a health data network for consumers. OpenAI says connections require explicit user permission and can be revoked at any time.

ChatGPT Health is positioned as a support tool rather than a substitute for medical care. It is not intended to diagnose or treat conditions, but to help users understand test results, organize information ahead of appointments, interpret data from wearables, and identify trends related to diet, exercise, or coverage options. OpenAI says the goal is to support informed conversations with clinicians, not replace them.

Privacy and security are central to the product’s design, says OpenAI. Health conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, with additional protections such as purpose-built encryption and data isolation. OpenAI says conversations within Health are not used to train its foundation models, and health-related memories do not flow into non-health chats. Users can review or delete stored health information at any time and are encouraged to enable multi-factor authentication for additional protection.

The product was developed in collaboration with physicians, says OpenAI. Over the past two years, over 260 physicians across 60 countries and multiple specialties have contributed feedback on model outputs. This input informs how the system communicates risk, encourages follow-up with clinicians, and prioritizes safety.

ChatGPT Health is evaluated using HealthBench, an assessment framework created with physician input. Instead of relying on exam-style testing, the framework uses clinician-written criteria to assess clarity, safety, appropriate escalation of care, and relevance to individual context.

Access to ChatGPT Health is initially being rolled out to a limited group of users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. OpenAI says it plans to expand availability on web and iOS in the coming weeks. Some medical record integrations are now limited to the United States, and Apple Health connections require iOS.
