The Mexican Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles (AMIVE) discussed the need for a "just energy transition" that includes current workers from various productive sectors. AMIVE emphasized that the skills required for the new economy should not only focus on young people but also on those already integrated into the value chains of the electronics, electrical, and automotive industries.

During the Siemens Energy Innovation Summit, Diana Ávalos, Director General, AMIVE, advocated for the recovery of the Just Transition concept, considering the inclusion of workers in sectors undergoing automation, which could reduce job opportunities. She questioned what will happen to current workers tied to processes being automated.

During the panel “Challenges and Opportunities in the Energy Innovation Ecosystem in LATAM,” Ávalos shared her views on electromobility, describing electric vehicles as “batteries with wheels” that can be useful during emergencies, such as hurricanes, to power critical infrastructure like hospitals.

Néstor Luna, from the United Nations International Center of Excellence for Latin America and the Caribbean, highlighted the importance of promoting knowledge and technological development among students to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy. He called for incentives and support for public universities, which often face challenges keeping up with technological development.

Luna also emphasized the crucial role of the public sector in creating a favorable environment to attract investments, which will in turn increase the demand for skilled labor. He cited estimates from the OECD and the International Energy Agency (IEA), indicating that inaction on CO2 emissions in Latin America could impact the regional GDP by up to 11%.
