CFE Director Defends López Obrador’s Energy Reform
Manuel Bartlett, Director General, CFE, emphasized the need for a constitutional reform in Mexico's energy sector, underlining the importance of state control in planning and managing the National Electric System (SEN).
Bartlett highlighted flaws in the system, criticizing the 2013 energy reform for favoring private entities over public interests. He stated that the proposed reform aims to reinstate state control to ensure energy self-sufficiency and provide affordable electricity to all citizens.
During AMLO’s daily briefing, Bartlett said the initiative seeks to uphold national sovereignty and social justice by prioritizing public interests over private entities in the provision of electricity. He underscored that electricity is not merely a commodity but a fundamental right, crucial for the nation's development. The proposed reform aims to rectify distortions introduced by the 2013 energy reform, which marginalized public enterprises like CFE in favor of private corporations.
Bartlett detailed key amendments to the constitution, emphasizing the need to define planning and control within the electricity sector. He highlighted the importance of incorporating social justice principles into laws governing private sector participation in the industry. Additionally, he advocated for the elimination of the concept of state-owned productive enterprises, which, he argued, prioritized profit over social responsibility.
The proposed constitutional amendments align with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's vision of ensuring energy sovereignty and equitable access to electricity for all Mexicans. Bartlett emphasized that the reform aims to rectify systemic imbalances and reinforce the role of state entities like CFE in guaranteeing the provision of essential public services.
