SENER Expands Power Access for Indigenous Communities in Durango
The federal government announced investments for key electrification projects for Indigenous communities in Durango, ensuring access to electricity for the O’dam, Wixárika, and Mexikan peoples. The initiative is part of the Justice Plan for Indigenous Peoples and seeks to address long-standing infrastructure gaps in marginalized regions, announced SENER.
Energy Minister, Luz Elena González, and CFE Director General, Emilia Calleja, accompanied Sheinbaum and Durango Governor Esteban Villegas during the official handover of the projects. Works will benefit over 10,000 residents, restoring their right to electricity and improving their quality of life.
“Thanks to the projects delivered today in Durango, the government guarantees electricity service and restores one of the fundamental rights of the O’dam, Wixárika, and Mexikan peoples,” González stated.
Authorities also identified additional electrification needs in the region. To address these, a new collaboration agreement has been established between CFE and the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI). The government will allocate over MX$421 million (US$20.632 million) to extend electricity infrastructure to more communities. This effort aligns with Sheinbaum’s broader vision of Justicia Energética (Energy Justice), a policy aimed at closing the energy access gap and ensuring that historically underserved populations can benefit from reliable electricity. Officials emphasized that these actions reflect a commitment to social equity and sustainable development.
The concept of energy justice was officially introduced in Mexico’s secondary legislation for Sheinbaum’s energy reform. The concept is aimed at reducing inequalities in energy access and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive priority attention.
Following the energy justice principle, the law defines CFE and PEMEX's primary role as fulfilling their social responsibility while ensuring the continuity, accessibility, security, and reliability of the national electricity system and the supply of hydrocarbons and natural gas.
