IMSS, SNTSS Launch National Mental Health Strategy
IMSS and the National Union of Social Security Workers (SNTSS) have launched an Emotional Coping Course as part of their National Mental Health Strategy for Workers. This course will be given at the Churubusco Convention Center. It is designed to help participants assess their emotional state and develop strategies to enhance their well-being both personally and professionally.
"Mental health is a real necessity with social, personal, and economic consequences. It impacts three major areas: absenteeism, business productivity, and workplace relationships," said Javier Guerrero García, Director of Operations and Evaluations, IMSS. In Latin America, four out of ten workers report high levels of occupational stress, García added.
In 2021, IMSS introduced its Comprehensive Mental Health Program to standardize mental health services, expand access to care, and ensure equitable distribution of resources, stated García. IMSS Health Program follows the guidelines of the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, and national public policies.
Mental Health in Mexico
IMSS conducts nationwide screenings for depression, anxiety, and panic disorders in individuals over 20 years old through PrevenIMSS modules. IMSS’ preventive screenings have identified over 2.8 million cases of individuals exhibiting symptoms of mental health disorders, explained Alva Alejandra Santos Carillo, Director of Medical Benefits, IMSS. Depression, anxiety, panic disorders, and other conditions are widespread, with an estimated 30% of the global population experiencing such issues at some point, added Santos.
Institutional efforts are important to prevent, diagnose, and address mental health concerns within the workforce, highlighted Rafael Olivos Hernández, General Secretary, SNTSS. IMSS and SNTSS’ initiative focuses on creating spaces for mental health care, free from stigma, while raising awareness through educational campaigns, stated Rafael Maaud Abud, Director of Training and Quality Centers System, SNTSS.
