Lumia Unveils First Wearable for Head Blood Flow Tracking
Lumia Health has unveiled the world’s first wearable device designed to track blood flow to the head. The Lumia wearable aims to support the management of chronic conditions associated with dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, and fainting.
The Lumia wearable was developed in collaboration with leading institutions, including Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard Medical School, as reported by Lumia. Its blood flow tracking correlates strongly with Transcranial Doppler ultrasound, the gold standard for measuring cerebral blood flow, with a Pearson correlation of 0.91 for Carotid Flow Time. Its Lumia Flow Index has also been shown to align more closely with orthostatic symptoms than traditional heart rate metrics, earning recognition from patient advocacy groups.
Unlike wrist-worn devices that suffer from data inaccuracies due to arm movement, Lumia’s lightweight wearable taps into the external carotid artery through the ear. Weighing less than a gram, the wearable provides biofeedback that helps users identify how posture, hydration, and other lifestyle factors impact blood flow, encouraging behavioral adjustments to mitigate symptoms.
“Blood flow to the head is a critical yet often overlooked vital sign for millions of people dealing with chronic conditions worsened by standing,” says Daniel Lee, Co-Founder and CEO, Lumia Health. “While our initial focus is on chronic brain blood flow issues, we see broader applications for conditions such as sepsis management, heart failure, and fall prevention in older adults.”
Since 2023, Lumia Health has secured significant market traction. The company completed a US$560,000 crowdfunding campaign, sold out its pre-order inventory, and achieved more than US$3.6 million in contracts with government agencies. Beta testing has already demonstrated strong user engagement, with participants wearing the device for over 12 hours daily and spending more than 40 minutes on its accompanying mobile app.
Lumia Health has raised US$10.4 million in funding and secured additional venture capital and research contracts. Due to strong demand, sales of the Lumia wearable will reopen on Feb. 4, 2025. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in March.
