Mexico has reinforced its alignment with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2030 goal of eliminating hepatitis C by advancing a national program that ensures universal, free, and timely access to testing and treatment.

Launched in line with WHO’s global health sector strategy, Mexico’s program aims to reduce transmission, expand access to care, and ultimately eliminate hepatitis C through coordinated national action. The strategy is supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), whose technical teams are working alongside Mexico’s health institutions to strengthen implementation.

“From the start, this program has allowed us to intensify efforts and guarantee access to diagnosis and treatment — free, universal, and timely — for the entire population,” says David Kershenobich, Minister of Health.

According to PAHO, millions of people in Mexico have undergone screening as part of the national program, and health officials report cure rates exceeding 95% using free direct-acting antiviral therapies. The platform enables real-time monitoring and helps identify service gaps, which are critical for adapting strategies in a timely manner. Juan Luis Mosqueda, Head, National Center for the Prevention and Control of HIV and AIDS (CENSIDA), highlights the role of the Mexico Without Hepatitis C Observatory in tracking outcomes and improving transparency.

José Moya, Representative in Mexico, PAHO/WHO, says that chronic hepatitis B and C remain underdiagnosed worldwide, despite being preventable, treatable, and — especially in the case of hepatitis C — curable. He emphasizes the need to integrate hepatitis-related services into national health systems, including testing, vaccination, and harm reduction.

World Hepatitis Day 2025 is observed under the theme “Hepatitis: Know It to Fight It.” As part of the commemorations, PAHO/WHO will continue collaborating with Mexico throughout the week to support the country’s goal of eliminating hepatitis C by the end of the decade.
