Mexico Secures 96% of Required Medicines for 2025-2026: SSA
As of July 30, Mexico's Ministry of Health (SSA) has secured 96% of the 4.073 billion medicines and medical supplies needed for the 2025–2026 period. The acquisition, carried out through various procurement processes, represents a coordinated effort among major public healthcare institutions to ensure timely access to treatments across the country.
In addition to the completed acquisitions, 60.6 million units are being purchased, while another 17.8 million are eligible for adjudication on Aug. 16, 2024. Contracts for an additional 105 million units are in the process of being formalized, which would further contribute to supply availability in the coming weeks.
Institutional supply levels have shown marked improvement. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reports a 96% supply level, while the State Workers’ Social Security and Services Institute (ISSSTE) stands at 94%.
Recent months have seen significant increases in the reception of medical supplies. IMSS received 200 million units in June and July, up from 59 million in May, marking a 40% rise in the average monthly intake. ISSSTE received 30 million units, a 200% increase from the 5 million reported in May. IMSS-Bienestar also reported an 80% increase, receiving 24 million units in July compared to May. An additional 70 million units are expected in early August.
In the announcement, the Health Ministry emphasized its commitment to ensuring nationwide distribution and accessibility of medicines through continued institutional coordination and procurement processes.
