Mexico has reported a significant increase in confirmed mpox infections, reaching 467 cases nationwide by the end of epidemiological week 30, according to the country’s Ministry of Health. The number represents a tenfold rise compared to the same period in 2024, when 46 cases were recorded.

Most of the reported infections are concentrated in Mexico City, which accounts for 280 of the national total, reports UNOTV. The surge in infections follows global trends observed since the World Health Organization (WHO) reclassified monkeypox as mpox in 2022, aiming to reduce stigma and reflect the evolving understanding of the disease.

Mpox is a viral illness transmitted through close physical contact, often skin-to-skin, and may spread via contaminated materials or respiratory secretions. Symptoms typically appear within five to 21 days of exposure and last two to four weeks.

In addition to Mexico City, other states reporting double-digit case counts include Jalisco with 71 cases, the State of Mexico with 19, and Nuevo Leon and Veracruz, each with 17 cases. Aguascalientes, Queretaro, and several other states have reported lower case numbers ranging from one to 10.

The most recent confirmation comes from Chiapas, where health authorities identified the first case in the state.
