A new study by P&G Health has revealed that one in seven people in Mexico suffers from peripheral neuropathy, but nearly 83% of those affected have not been diagnosed. The findings mark the first in-depth examination of the disease in a Latin American population.

“This study offers new insights into the prevalence and burden of peripheral neuropathy in the region, where diagnosis remains a significant challenge,” said P&G Health in a statement released during Peripheral Neuropathy Awareness Week, observed in the second week of May.

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that affects the peripheral nerves and is often linked to diabetes, impacting about 50% of diabetic individuals. The symptoms, which include cramping, tingling, numbness, and sensations similar to electric shocks in the hands and feet, can interfere with daily life and often go unnoticed. In severe cases, the condition can lead to undetected wounds that may become infected, potentially resulting in amputation.

The study, conducted in collaboration with medical specialists, also highlighted the disease's broader impact. According to the data, 90% of individuals diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy reported significant changes to their quality of life. In addition, 80% of respondents said the condition negatively affected their family relationships, while 40% noted an impact on their work and social lives.

The research underlines the lack of awareness surrounding the disease and its symptoms. The low diagnosis rate suggests that a large segment of the population may be living with the condition without appropriate medical attention.

Although the study noted that the use of a combination of vitamin B1, B6, and B12 has been associated with improvements in patients’ quality of life, P&G Health advises consulting a medical professional for individualized guidance.
