Puebla Launches Health Strategy to Tackle Obesity
The Mexican government has launched the national “3 x Mi Salud” strategy in Puebla, aiming to reduce obesity and overweight rates through regulatory measures, prevention campaigns, and community engagement.
The initiative targets three dimensions including prevention, early detection, and comprehensive care. The program also aims to represent a shift in disease prevention programs linked to obesity and overweight. Gabriela Sánchez, Minister of Sports and Youth of Puebla, says that the strategy places health as a right, not a privilege, and positions the youth sector at the center of public policy.
Ramiro López, Deputy Minister of Health Policy and Population Welfare, highlights the urgency of addressing excess weight, which affects seven in 10 adults and one in three children in the country.
Prevention is a core principle of governance, says Alejandro Armenta, Governor of Puebla. He says that institutions across all levels of government are prioritizing public health over corporate interests, welcoming restrictions on sugary drinks and processed foods. Armenta says that the program focuses on eliminating sugary drinks and artificial sweeteners, while promoting physical activity.
The event also honored nursing personnel, particularly those who traveled to Chihuahua to support measles containment efforts.
