SSA Reports Medical Supply Distribution on March
Mexico's health authorities announced that starting on March 3, hospitals and state warehouses will begin receiving medical supplies as part of an effort to strengthen the healthcare system. According to IMSS, the initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance medical services, including an expansion in specialist training and a nationwide vaccination campaign.
“Since October, under the instruction of President Claudia Sheinbaum, nearly 30 million influenza vaccines and 6 million COVID-19 vaccines have been administered, achieving an 83.27% coverage rate,” says David Kershenobich, Minister of Health. IMSS reports that COVID-19 infections have gone from 295,268 during the 2021-2022 peak to 3,065 cases this season. Kershenobich noted the introduction of a tetravalent vaccine produced in Mexico, that offers broader protection against multiple virus strains.
The distribution of medical supplies will begin in hospitals and state warehouses on March 3 and extend to health units starting March 5. Supply volumes will increase after March 15 in hospitals and after March 23 in health units, states Eduardo Clark, Deputy Minister of Health Sector Integration and Development. “The pharmaceutical industry has been highly cooperative in accelerating deliveries, not only meeting legal deadlines but improving upon them. This allows us to secure earlier supply availability,” Clark adds.
IMSS announces that training programs for medical specialists have expanded. In 2025, the number of available residency positions will reach 18,207 candidates admitted, representing 42% of all applicants. Of these, 50% of positions are at IMSS, 30% at IMSS Bienestar and other health institutions, 10% at ISSSTE, 2% at PEMEX, and 5% at the private sector. Further allocations have been made for 420 foreign doctors, 140 for the Ministry of National Defense, and 32 for the Navy.
