World Sleep Day, observed every March 14, serves as a reminder of the critical role sleep plays in maintaining overall health. Although sleep accounts for nearly one-third of human life, many people struggle to achieve quality rest. During sleep, the body and brain remain active, repairing tissues, consolidating memory, and regulating essential functions that contribute to well-being, reports Veracruz’s Ministry of Health.
Sleep has a role in facilitating physical healing, aiding recovery from illnesses, managing stress, problem-solving, memory consolidation, and enhancing motor skills. However, in Mexico, a 2022 study published by the National Library of Medicine analyzed 8,649 adults and found that about one-quarter of them experienced sleep difficulties at least three times a week. The most common issues included insomnia, frequent awakenings, and non-restorative sleep. Additionally, research indicates that middle-aged adults tend to sleep less than both younger and older adults, likely due to health changes associated with this stage of life.
To improve sleep quality, it is recommended to create a calm and comfortable environment with an appropriate temperature, according to Tomás Delfino, Specialist Assigned to the Mental Health and Addictions Coordination, Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Reducing stress and avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are also essential. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and limiting screen time before bed can further enhance sleep quality, as exposure to blue light can disrupt the body's natural circadian rhythm.
On social media, the "sleepmaxxing" trend is promoting various techniques to improve sleep quality, reports MBN. This movement encourages optimizing both sleep duration and quality through lifestyle changes, specialized devices, and relaxation habits. However, healthcare professionals have raised concerns about whether these practices truly enhance sleep.
Advancements in technology have also led to the development of tools designed to improve sleep quality. These tools can monitor factors such as room temperature, humidity, air quality, and light intensity, providing personalized recommendations to create an optimal environment for rest.
