Banorte Stadium Transforms for Historic 2026 World Cup Opener
Yesterday marked the official one-year countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a historic event that will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. As part of the preparations, Mexico’s Banorte Stadium formerly known as Estadio Azteca, is undergoing a major transformation to welcome the world and make history as the only stadium ever to host the World Cup’s opening match for the third time.
“People are at the heart of this transformation. Our main goal is to substantially improve the experience in every possible way. We are also increasing the stadium’s capacity so that more fans can enjoy the biggest sports and entertainment events in our country,” says Félix Aguirre, General Director, Banorte Stadium.
Slated for completion by March 2026, the physical and technological renovation of Banorte Stadium began in March 2024 and represents a total investment of about MX$3 billion (US$$158.91 million). While embracing cutting-edge upgrades, the stadium wants to carefully preserve its architectural identity and legacy for future generations of fans and visitors from around the globe.
The key highlights of the renovation include:
-
A state-of-the-art hybrid grass system, featuring natural turf with advanced water suction and air injection technology to ensure optimal field conditions.
-
Over 2,200m² of LED screens, placed both inside and outside the stadium for an enhanced visual experience.
-
Streamlined access points to improve entry, exit, and crowd flow throughout the venue.
-
High-tech antennas providing next-generation connectivity through free WiFi-6 and a fully cashless experience.
-
Enhanced accessibility features, including new elevators, restrooms, and dedicated infrastructure for people with disabilities.

Modernized facade and roof, giving the stadium a refreshed look while preserving its iconic essence.
Additionally, the modernization plan includes upgraded player and media facilities such as new locker rooms for athletes and referees, medical zones, press rooms, and mixed zones, aligning Banorte Stadium with the world’s most advanced sports venues.
A core focus of the renovation is the playing field, which will be equipped with a cutting-edge ventilation and vacuum system to ensure durability, fast recovery, and long-term stability.
Sustainability has been a guiding principle throughout the process. The stadium is being upgraded in line with international environmental standards, emphasizing energy efficiency, responsible water distribution, and waste management. These efforts have earned Banorte Stadium the LEED sustainability certification.
