Mexico’s construction sector continued to show contraction in August 2025, as key indicators deteriorated both month-over-month and year-over-year rates, according to the latest National Survey of Construction Companies (ENEC) published by INEGI on October 24.

The value of production fell 2.9% compared with July and dropped 19.1% versus August 2024 in real terms. The indicator reflects the ongoing slowdown in construction activity nationwide, with seasonally adjusted figures showing persistent downward pressure.

Labor metrics also declined. Total personnel employed by construction firms decreased 0.7% month over month and 11.5% year over year. The drop was more pronounced among non-permanent workers, whose participation fell 2.8% monthly. Hours worked contracted 1.1% compared with July and were down 13.5% annually.

Real wages paid to construction workers edged 1.1% lower on a monthly basis and likewise showed a 1.1% decline relative to August of the prior year. Salaries for laborers dropped more sharply than those of administrative employees.

Regional performance varied significantly. Baja California, Guerrero, Sonora, Tlaxcala, and Baja California Sur registered notable growth in real production compared to the previous year, while Campeche, Tabasco, Oaxaca, and Durango experienced deep double-digit declines. Mexico City, despite remaining an important construction hub, showed a decline of more than 11% in annual production.

According to INEGI, ENEC provides essential data to assess employment, production, wages, and labor utilization across the country’s construction industry. The survey tracks companies engaged in residential building, civil engineering, and specialized works, with results published monthly
