CLUSMIN has unanimously appointed Abel González as its new president, succeeding Jaime Lomelín. González emphasized that his tenure will focus on advancing initiatives aimed at strengthening CLUSMIN's position within Zacatecas' mining industry.

González, a metallurgical engineer with 33 years of experience, has previously led significant mining operations in Mexico, including San Martín, Charcas, and Cozamín. He emphasized that CLUSMIN will continue to promote innovation in professional development and the integration of new technologies and processes. “Our goal is to ensure the continued growth and development of the mining industry in this region. Zacatecas' mining sector holds immense potential due to its rich resources, which must be preserved and optimized,” said González.

Zacatecas' Mining Sector

Zacatecas stands out as Mexico's top producer of silver, lead, and zinc, ranking second in copper production. The state contributes significantly to Mexico's mining output, with 35.8% of the national silver production, 18.7% of gold, 62.8% of lead, 47.9% of zinc, and 9.2% of copper in 2023. Zacatecas is home to Mexico's largest gold mine, Newmont's Peñasquito, contributing over 13% to the state's GDP. At the same time, with an approximate value of US$888 million, Zacatecas generates 22.4% of Mexico's mining production value.

The mining industry in Zacatecas employs 14,990 workers, making it the third-largest formal employment sector after trade and construction, while another 41,103 people are employed in mining-related activities (manufacturing industry).
