The Mexican Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists, and Geologists (AIMMGM) and the Mining Development Trust (FIFOMI) signed a collaboration agreement to promote technical and continuous training for mining SMEs and personnel.

The agreement aims to strengthen the formation of professionals in geology, mining, and metallurgy. For Rubén Del Pozo, President, AIMMGM, the partnership will create dual-education opportunities, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in practical industry settings. He emphasized the commitment of AIMMGM and the Ministry of Economy (SE) to developing the required talent for the sector. "We need to crystallize the opportunities for students from their academic work in the classroom. We must open the industry's doors so they can apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom and strengthen it," Del Pozo added.

Fernando Aboitiz, Head of the Coordinating Unit for Extractive Activities, SE, outlined that FIFOMI has the potential to become a development bank for the Mexican economy, not only for the mining sector. He stated the goal is to elevate mining from a primary activity to "the first industry of all" by integrating it with education and innovation. Aboitiz added that FIFOMI aims to be closer to mining operations rather than acting solely as a financial intermediary. “For this reason, FIFOMI will focus on social aspects, offering a spirit of collaboration, training, and value-added generation, seeking education and innovation,” reads AIMMGM’s press release.

The signing marks the first joint event focused on education between the mining industry and the government in six years. Diego Gómez, Director for Credit, Finance, and Management, FIFOMI, noted that the trust has already been actively supporting small and medium-sized mining and its value chain. He said the reinforced training and technical assistance from this new partnership will help smaller companies make their processes more efficient and increase their operational capacity.
