Industry needs and production processes are constantly evolving while the demand for high productivity continues to escalate. Therefore, having expertly trained teams and aligning with the trends that define the trajectory of the manufacturing sector are essential in order to achieve continued success.

According to the "2023 Manufacturing Industry Outlook" survey, conducted by Deloitte, the five predominant trends in the manufacturing sector for this year are:

1. Invest in advanced technologies that help mitigate risks.

2. Implement a wide range of talent management strategies to reduce voluntary resignations, such as salary increases, upskilling, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) initiatives, and flexible work arrangements.

3. Rely on proven mitigation strategies with improved tactics to ensure supply.

4. Take a holistic approach from smart factory initiatives.

5. Focus on corporate social responsibility.

Sandvik Coromant is attuned to the needs of our clients and have aligned our strategies accordingly to maintain our position as industry leaders. Our considerable industry knowledge has allowed us to tailor solutions that meet the new demands being placed on us.

For example, tapping is usually the last process a part goes through, and the worst-case scenario is that a tap part breaks, which is why process safety and predictable tool life are so important in tapping operations. Production processes tend to demand high productivity, so as the slowest process, tapping can adversely cause a bottleneck. Having the necessary technology and tools can measurably increase productivity and reduce cost per part, as well as expand on cutting data, all with a greatly improved tool life.

In recent years, there have been remarkable developments in the technology used to create cavities and complex shapes via turning. These advances, along with the new capabilities of modern machines and Computer Aided Machining (CAM) programs, have paved the way for the new method of Y-axis turning that makes it possible to machine complex shapes with a single tool, reducing cycle time and minimizing the risk of melting points, thus improving stability, and reducing the risk of vibrations. All this can be made possible due to the benefits of multitasking machines.

When it comes to milling processes, newer technologies and grade materials, such as one-piece solid carbide grooving cutters, have made it possible for us to increase productivity without sacrificing safety processes or tool longevity. As a result, grooving cutters designed for aluminum machining have been created to offer superior capabilities in all applications. These cutters deliver a stable machining process, reduced burrs, good surface finishes, and hardly any vibrations.

It is important to highlight that the manufacturing sector is experiencing a tremendous boost as a direct result of nearshoring. This is one of the most important sectors in Mexico, since it represents more than 18% of GDP and at 87% is the main exporting industry, hence the significance of staying at the forefront of all trends related to industry needs.

Global manufacturing has created an overflow of US$3.4 billion of manufacturing from Asia (not including China), US$4 billion from the US, and US$6 billion from China annually, while in Latin America this annual amount has risen to US$4 billion. The most active countries in the world in terms of manufacturing are Mexico, Japan, Canada, and China. If these nations were to invest a combined total of US$11 billion  in 2023, approximately US$3 billion could be allocated for Mexico's use in constructing factories and expanding manufacturing as the fifth-leading employment sector.

According to Statista, by December 2022, the number of establishments related to manufacturing in Mexico is expected to reach nearly 608,500, with the State of Mexico likely to offer the most manufacturing establishments at around 65,000.

Ongoing and future trends will continue to prioritize customers' evolving needs for greater customization and personalization. This means that in order to meet and exceed customer expectations, we need to stay up to date with the latest trends to ensure safe and efficient processes, while also being environmentally friendly.

Through any uncertainties we may face, it is critical that we concentrate on broadening our array of offerings by integrating cutting-edge technologies and forming first-rate partnerships to remain ahead of the curve and contribute to the manufacturing sector's growth.
