Even though mining is commonly associated with irresponsible practices and negative environmental and community impacts, the Association of Mining Engineers, Metallurgists, and Geologists of Mexico (AIMMGM) asserts that it is a responsible industry. Mining has played a crucial role as one of the main drivers of Mexico's growth throughout history and is anticipated to continue contributing significantly to the future. While currently plagued by uncertainty, AIMMGM expresses confidence that the mining industry will experience improvements under the next government, regardless of the winning political party.

During the press conference of the XIV International Mining Conference Chihuahua 2024, Luis Humberto Vázquez, President, AIMMGM's CDN, highlighted that Mexico's rich resources and mining culture make it the ideal country for mining projects and one of the Top 10 producers of 17 minerals. "We have been one of the best mineral producers for many years. There is a lot of potential, but we are still accused of being a dirty industry. We are working to change our image and show the true face of mining."

Vázquez stressed that although the mining sector has been accused of having 70% of the territory under concession, it only has 7.95% of the territory and only 0.08% is in production. "Our footprint is small and we are one of the only sectors trying to remediate the impact we have. We use little water, as we recycle a lot, and we are also the second sector in terms of reforestation in the entire country."

Bernardo Olvera Picón, President, AIMMGM Chihuahua District, underscored Chihuahua's significant standing in the mining sector, ranking prominently in various minerals. The state holds the third position in gold, second in silver, zinc, and lead, fourth in copper, and fifth in iron production. Due to its mining relevance, Chihuahua has been chosen to host the International Mining Conference 2024, scheduled from April 22 to 26.

Magali Bailón Domínguez, Coordinator, XIV International Mining Conference Chihuahua, highlighted the event's focus as a key international forum for mining relations. Additionally, the conference aims to showcase the latest services and equipment advancements within the sector. Notable presentations include Exploration Projects by Vázquez and Mineral Demand for Energy Transition by Flor de Maria Harp, Director, SGM.

The potential impact of recent mining sector reforms to ban open-pit mines and tighten regulations on water concessions were also discussed. AIMMGM expressed concern about the potential short and long-term effects of the reforms. However, it remains optimistic about amendments to the current Mining Law and new reform proposals.

Vázquez emphasized that the outlook for the mining industry, regardless of the party of the incoming government, will improve, as mining has positioned itself as an ally for Mexico's development. "We now have a clearer understanding of what our industry needs and what the government is looking for. Regardless of who wins, we are optimistic about building stronger relationships. Right now, our relationship with MORENA shows a more positive understanding, leading to better collaboration."
