Canada-based gold and base metals company Torex Gold inaugurated its solar plant for its Morelos Mining Complex in Guerrero. The plant is expected to reduce the company’s gas emissions by 4%, contributing to the company’s environmental goals by 2050.
Torex Gold’s subsidiary Minera Media Luna inaugurated the Plena Sol photovoltaic system, a solar plant that will partially supply power to the company's Morelos Mining Complex. The plant has an installed capacity of 8.4MW and consists of 15,400 solar modules.
Plena Sol aims to reduce the complex's greenhouse gas emissions by 4%. Angie Robson, Vice President of Human Resources and Communication, Torex Gold, stated this is part of the company's climate plan to transition toward net-zero emissions by 2050. Robson explained that the system's annual electricity generation will be equivalent to the consumption of approximately 6,000 homes.
Faysal Rodríguez, Vice President Mexico, Torex Gold, recognized the work of the technical development team and noted that the solar plant is unique for the mining industry. He added that the company's environmental commitment is also reflected in creating the first Environmental Management Unit (UMA) for the local beaded lizard. “Mining does a lot of good for Guerrero. We continue to demonstrate that there is a way to do mining with responsibility and innovation,” he stated.
Roberto Berardo, Vice President for Mining and Industry, Release, the company responsible for developing the system, recalled that the project faced multiple challenges since its inception in 2020. “We are not just cutting a ribbon, we are also marking the beginning of a new stage, in which solar energy will be a structural part of power generation at Media Luna,” Berardo expressed.
Cocula’s Municipal President, Raymond Román celebrated the investment as a sign of the bond between the private sector and the community. "This plant not only puts the municipality at the technological forefront, but it also represents tangible actions by Media Luna that future generations will appreciate," he said.
