WIM Durango Appoints Karely Solís as New President
Women in Mining (WIM) Durango appointed its new Board of Directors. The organization, which promotes sustainable mining focusing on gender equality, named Karely Solís as the new President of its Durango chapter. Solís called on organizations to collaborate to address the challenges the mining sector faces.
During the VIII Durango Mining Congress 2024, Rubén del Pozo, President, AIMMGM, recited the oath to the incoming board members. Karely Solís was named President of WIM Durango, taking over from Laurencia Flores.
During the event, del Pozo highlighted that the participation of women in the mining and metallurgical industries has increased by 85% over the past decade. He called for further efforts to enhance women's active participation and leadership, advocating for equal pay and access to necessary services.
Doris Vega, National Chairwoman, WIM Mexico, noted that at the current rate of progress, achieving gender parity in the industry could take 152 years. She emphasized the need to continue pushing for greater inclusion of women in all sectors, including mining. “Women do not have all that time available, nor are we willing to wait that long, which is why we continue to push for the inclusion of women in all areas," she said, highlighting that mining is one of the industries that has made the most progress on gender equality issues.
Jesús Ramos, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Durango's Ministry of Economic Development, acknowledged the increasing involvement of women in the mining sector and their contribution to the industry's development in Durango.
After assuming her new role, Karely Solís urged collaboration among key organizations in the mining sector, including AIMMGM, CIMMGM, CAMIMEX, and mining clusters, to address the challenges facing the industry.
The new WIM Durango Board of Directors includes Karely Solís as President, Samantha Morales as Vice President, Rebeca Anaya as Secretary, Monserrat Arenas as Treasurer, Laurencia Flores as Head of Institutional Relations, Violeta Rojas as Head of Memberships, and Yudith Armienta as Head of Communications.
