APM Terminals Lazaro Cardenas has announced the arrival of six state-of-the-art electric Automated Rail-Mounted Gantry (ARMG) cranes. This development marks a critical milestone ahead of the terminal’s Phase II operations, set to begin in 2026, and underscores the company’s commitment to efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility.

“At APM Terminals Mexico, we are dedicated to supporting the country’s infrastructure, industry, and, most importantly, its people. This investment demonstrates our long-term vision of developing intelligent, efficient, and sustainable ports ready for global competition,” says Beatriz Yera, Managing Director, APM Terminals Mexico.

The newly arrived electric ARMG cranes are fully automated and designed to deliver zero direct emissions while enhancing the precision and speed of cargo handling. Their integration is part of a broader effort by APM Terminals to elevate Lazaro Cardenas into a world-class logistics hub.

To date, APM Terminals has invested US$165 million in the terminal’s ongoing expansion, reinforcing its commitment to driving Mexico’s economic growth and supporting the country’s transition to cleaner, more efficient port operations.

Phase II of the expansion includes a 65ha increase in terminal area, effectively doubling its annual capacity to 2.2 million TEUs. These enhancements aim to solidify Lazaro Cardenas’ role as one of the most advanced ports on the Pacific coast and a vital link in Mexico’s international trade network.

Key technological enhancements include:

  • Six Electric ARMG Cranes: Fully automated and emission-free, supporting precise and efficient container handling.

  • 14 Hybrid Shuttle Carriers: Already operational, these carriers optimize intra-terminal cargo transport with reduced environmental impact.

  • Four Empty-Container Handlers: Capable of stacking containers up to seven units high and handling two at a time, enhancing yard efficiency.

  • New Container Zones: Three specialised blocks for full containers and a new dedicated yard for empty containers to streamline operations.

To support these innovations, APM Terminals is also implementing comprehensive technical training programs for all operational personnel, aligning practices with top international standards and ensuring long-term operational excellence.
