Railcar Accident in Irapuato Kills Six; ARTF Probes
On Wednesday afternoon, a major vehicle accident occurred, resulting in the deaths of at least six people and leaving several others injured in different parts of the city. The incident involved a loose railcar from a Ferromex train, which collided with several vehicles in the 1 de Mayo and Europa neighborhoods, in Irapuato, Guanajuato.
According to initial reports and eyewitness accounts, the railroad crossing barrier at the intersection of Paseo de Irapuato and Genova failed to lower, allowing a railcar to detach and crash into a white Nissan March vehicle, killing three people on the spot.
A few meters ahead, the same railcar struck three more vehicles, a white Nissan and a blue Nissan Sentra, on Mariano J. Garcia and Lazaro Cardenas streets, just beneath the Bicentenario bridge. In this second collision, three more people lost their lives, and a motorcyclist was seriously injured.
Emergency teams quickly responded to attend to the injured, who were rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.
The Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) confirmed it has launched a formal investigation to determine the causes of the accident, in accordance with the Railway Service Law and Regulations. The agency adds that it is working closely with Ferromex to provide support to the victims and their families.
Grupo México, through its subsidiary Ferromex, issued a statement expressing condolences to the families of those who died and solidarity with those affected, as well as the Irapuato community. The company confirmed it is cooperating fully with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
