President Andrés Manuel López Obrador defended the Cadereyta refinery operated by PEMEX in Nuevo Leon, emphasizing the complexity of environmental issues in the region. He refuted claims linking pollution solely to the refinery, highlighting the contribution of various industries to the environmental challenges in Monterrey and its surroundings.

Opened on March 18, 1979, the Cadereyta refinery has faced ongoing scrutiny over its environmental impact. Despite concerns, President López Obrador asserted that competent authorities would demonstrate the refinery's compliance with environmental regulations. He stressed the need for law enforcement to prevent pollution and safeguard public health, condemning corruption and privileges allowing some companies to evade environmental regulations.

In response to criticism and calls for a public consultation regarding the refinery's future due to environmental worries, the president announced plans to invite PEMEX officials to showcase the refinery's adherence to environmental standards during his morning press conferences.

Jorge Álvarez Máynez, presidential candidate for Movimiento Ciudadano, had previously proposed the closure of the Cadereyta refinery, echoing concerns over air quality and pollution. Governor of Nuevo Leon, Samuel García, aligned with demands from citizens to gradually close the refinery and relocate its operations to another processing plant.
