PEMEX Highlights Fertilizer Program's Role in Food Security
PEMEX Director General, Víctor Rodríguez, stated that the Fertilizers for Well-Being program is a key part of Mexico’s broader national strategy on sovereignty, dignity and security. The remarks were made during a fertilizer delivery event in Zacatecas, where Rodríguez emphasized the program's alignment with President Claudia Sheinbaum's energy policy.
According to Rodríguez Padilla, the program is not solely an agricultural support initiative, but a tool to achieve national goals such as food self-sufficiency and energy justice. He noted that fertilizers and hydrocarbons must serve the public, especially those working the land.
Ten weeks after expanding the program's coverage, PEMEX has distributed over 370,000mt of fertilizer across Mexico, achieving 56% progress in its nationwide delivery target. The current delivery pace exceeds 6,000t/d, with some days reaching 10,000t.
Rodríguez also outlined infrastructure updates linked to the fertilizer supply chain. Maintenance has been completed on auxiliary service boilers at the Lázaro Cárdenas Petrochemical Complex, and construction is advancing on its new main substation. A new shaft is being developed at the San Juan de la Costa mining unit and operational tests will soon begin at PEMEX's urea plants.
Additional upgrades are underway at the Cosoleacaque complex and at ammonia reception and dispatch terminals. Rodríguez Padilla said that ongoing modernization of the Escolín petrochemical complex in northern Veracruz is expected to support Mexico’s goal of domestic urea production, reducing reliance on imports and contributing to agricultural self-sufficiency.
He closed his remarks by recognizing the role of rural communities in Mexico’s food system and reiterated PEMEX’s commitment to supporting them through public programs and infrastructure development.
