Aguinaldo Savings Buy Ambulances/AHMSA Ready to Settle

Rafael is released. At yesterday’s daily briefing, President López Obrador said he would do everything possible to help secure the release of a young man named Rafael, who was still in prison despite having already served his sentence. Today, the president said that he had sent a letter to Arturo Zaldívar, President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), asking him to intervene in the case and at 3:30 a.m. the judge overseeing the case made the decision to release Rafael from the Guasave prison in Sinaloa. 

 

Aguinaldo savings. In November, AMLO announced that to help Mexico's economic recovery, the annual aguinaldo (bonus) for government officials would be reduced. Today, he said that more than MX$108 million had been saved as a result of the reduction in the bonuses. Deputy Governor of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) Galia Borja, who attended the president’s briefing, said that the money had been used to purchase 80 ambulances for rural hospitals.

 

Agro Nitrogenados agreement. Altos Hornos Mexico (AHMSA) stated yesterday that it would repair the damage resulting from the sale of its derelict Agro Nitrogenados nitrogenized fertilizer plant to PEMEX in 2014. Today, López Obrador said that AHMSA had asked for a deadline to return the US$200 million dollars paid for the plant. “Apparently, they have already agreed to return the money. They are asking us for some deadlines. We are considering it, of course, and the deadline should not exceed 2024; that is, it has to be settled before 2024.”

 

Santa Lucia Airport progress. Reporting on the progress at the new Santa Lucia Airport, AMLO talked about the Santa Lucia Airport and he said that a work of this type could only be found in countries like China. "It is one of the most important works in the world, above all, due to the quality and speed in which it is being built,” he said. The president also mentioned that the plan is going well and that the workers are doing their jobs day and night.

 

Pacific Alliance meeting then visit to Oaxaca. President López Obrador said he would be holding a conference with the presidents of the Pacific Alliance countries today. The alliance is a Latin American trade block conformed by Chile, Peru, Colombia and Mexico. López Obrador also announced that he would be visiting Oaxaca this weekend to supervise the road construction works that have been ongoing for some time now.
