Garcia Luna’s Trial Reopened / Purchase of Iberdrola Plants
García Luna’s Trial Reopened in Miami. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed developments regarding the trial against Genaro García Luna, a collaborator of former President Felipe Calderón. Pablo Gómez, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), reported that in this government, it is the first time that corruption, specifically in Ramo 23 (a government budget allocation), has been combated, which has led to the exposure of a corrupt State.
The government has a lawsuit against García Luna for the alleged illicit acquisition of US$634 million through the direct awarding of 30 contracts to Grupo Weinberg, headed by Jhonatan Alexis Weinberg Pinto. The trial will resume in Miami, Florida, and is currently in the conciliation stage, for which the government is preparing with the support of the Ministry of Public Security. The head of the Financial Intelligence Unit revealed that, so far, US$2 million has been recovered.
Purchase of Iberdrola Plants. President López Obrador recounted how the purchase of 13 electricity generation plants from Iberdrola was carried out, which are now part of the public heritage and operated by CFE, with a 60% energy generation capacity.
He highlighted that, at the recommendation of the Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, the acquisition was made, despite having a bad relationship with the Spanish company for having hired former President Calderón as its employee.
Mexicana de Aviación. Mexicana de Aviación is flying again, and as time passes, it will consolidate and acquire aircraft, expanding the company, stated President Andres Manuel López Obrador.
There is demand, and it is necessary to have more planes to connect the entire country, says the president. Flights to Salina Cruz, Oaxaca; Uruapan, Michoacan; Palenque, Tabasco; and Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, are already available because there were no flights to these places before, he says.
López Obrador explained that an order has already been placed with Boeing, but the planes will not be delivered until 2028. Some have been rented, but there is little availability due to a shortage of aircraft.
