MORENA. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that he will resign from MORENA at the end of his presidential term. “I have been quite satisfied, happy, and joyful for some time, as the people of Mexico have chosen the new president wisely.”
On Sept. 22, MORENA’s VII Extraordinary National Congress was held, where a new national leader was elected. Among the candidates were the Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde Luján, and the President's son, Andrés López Beltrán. With the votes of over 3,000 councilors, Alcalde emerged as the preferred candidate for party leadership. Following this announcement, she will assume office for a term lasting until 2027.
Ricardo Salinas Pliego. The president reported that the debt owed by Ricardo Salinas Pliego's companies is approximately MX$28 billion (US$1.6 billion). He added that there are ongoing legal challenges regarding tax payments by Salinas, which are pending resolution in the Supreme Court. “It is estimated that, including interest and other factors, the total may reach around MX$35 billion.”
In March, Salinas received an amparo that relieved him from MX$645 million tax obligations for supposed tax omissions in 2011. The Supreme Court ruled with three votes in favor and two against, determining that the Mexican magnate did not make improper deductions. Meanwhile, Salinas Pliego's companies continue to face an unresolved tax dispute involving MX$858 million from 2012.
