Trump Withdraws From Paris Agreement
President Donald Trump has again withdrawn the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, citing economic burdens and threats to national sovereignty. He also announced plans to declare a national energy emergency, expedite fossil fuel production, and reverse policies promoting renewable energy and electric vehicles. Critics, including environmental groups and international leaders, warn that this decision undermines global climate efforts amid worsening climate crises, while subnational actors like the US Climate Alliance pledge to continue advancing climate action.
Mexico Targets Ecosystem Restoration for 2030
Mexico plans to restore 150 million ha of critical ecosystems by 2030, significantly expanding efforts to combat climate change, preserve biodiversity, and ensure water sustainability. SEMARNAT Minister Alicia Bárcena highlighted initiatives like Lake Patzcuaro's restoration and the Bosque del Agua project as key examples of collaborative environmental action involving federal funds, community engagement, and technological innovation. Addressing water access and reducing bottled water reliance, SEMARNAT aims to prioritize potable water for human consumption while fostering sustainable practices nationwide.
IBM, L’Oréal Partner to Revolutionize Sustainable Cosmetics
IBM and L’Oréal have partnered to develop a generative AI model to revolutionize cosmetic formulation, focusing on sustainability by optimizing raw material use, reducing energy consumption, and minimizing waste. The AI model will support L’Oréal’s global research teams by analyzing vast formulation data to accelerate innovation, improve product performance, and enhance consumer satisfaction. This initiative aligns with L’Oréal’s "L’Oréal for the Future" program, aiming to source formulas from renewable or circular materials by 2030, while showcasing IBM’s expertise in foundational AI models for sustainable solutions.
Environmental Committees Promote Urban Gardening in CDMX
Mexico City has launched Environmental Well-Being Committees to promote sustainable practices through urban gardening, fostering nutrition, family interaction, and environmental care. SEDEMA provides gardening kits and training to residents, enabling them to grow vegetables like radishes and lettuce in small spaces while emphasizing organic produce and community ties. The program aims to expand citywide, embedding sustainability in everyday life.
World Vision Mexico Completed Reforestation Project in Acapulco
World Vision Mexico’s "Reverdeciendo Acapulco" project has restored 444.5ha of land by planting 11,850 fruit trees, fostering ecosystem resilience and addressing climate change impacts in eight communities affected by Hurricanes Otis and John. Running from March to December 2024, the initiative has benefited 359 children and adolescents directly and positively impacted 1,846 additional community members. Alongside reforestation, the project established 198 agroforestry units and offered environmental training workshops, promoting sustainable livelihoods and ecological recovery.
