Indigenous Reform. In commemoration of Human Rights Day, Claudia Sheinbaum signed two decrees aimed at advancing the rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities.
The first decree establishes the Presidential Commission for the 17 Justice and Regional Development Plans for Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples. This commission is tasked with ensuring the continuity of ongoing initiatives and implementing new projects to address the challenges faced by these communities.
The second decree recognizes Indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples as subjects of constitutional rights, elevating their protection beyond merely being a matter of public interest. The government also translated the recently approved Constitutional Reform on the Rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples into 64 linguistic variants, encompassing 57 Indigenous languages or linguistic groups from 58 Indigenous communities.
Klebsiella Oxytoca Outbreak. Minister of Health David Kershenobich provided an update on the Klebsiella oxytoca outbreak, reporting that the deaths of 13 children in the State of Mexico were predominantly attributed to factors such as prematurity, low birth weight, the use of invasive medical devices, parenteral nutrition, extensive antibiotic use, and immunosuppression. "Regrettably, all the affected children were premature, with the exception of one 14-year-old patient," Kershenobich stated during his address.
As of now, 20 cases have been identified, with seven patients remaining under medical care. Ongoing investigations are focused on identifying the source of the outbreak, and continuous monitoring is in place to prevent further incidents in other regions. Preliminary assessments suggest that the outbreak may be related to contamination in parenteral nutrition or the materials used for its administration.
Donald Trump’s Inauguration. President Claudia Sheinbaum has not yet received an invitation to attend Donald Trump's inauguration. However, she did not confirm whether she would attend if invited.
Trump is set to take office during the presidential inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025. The relationship between Trump and Sheinbaum remains uncertain, particularly after Trump recently threatened a 25% tariff on all Mexican imports and suggested that Mexico should be annexed by the United States. Sheinbaum has firmly rejected these statements, stressing the importance of cooperation over threats. Experts stressed that this is not the first time the Mexican government has had to navigate a Trump administration. President Sheinbaum’s predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, faced similar challenges but succeeded in maintaining a constructive relationship with Trump.
