INE announced that the votes of more than 60% of the polling places installed for the elections will be recounted due to possible inconsistencies. INE denies fraud in the elections and clarifies that such inconsistencies are normal. However, opposition parties have demanded a recount of 80% of the ballot boxes.
Martín Faz Mora, Head of the Electoral Organization Commission, INE, explained that a recount occurs when there is a margin of less than 1% between the top two candidates, a higher number of null votes compared to the margin between the main candidates, transcription errors, or incorrect numbers. Faz Mora emphasized that, in this case, a recount will be carried out due to inconsistencies in the electoral posters and the official records, stressing that these are common human errors made by poll officials.
"Any inconsistency that exists, because we cannot deny that inconsistencies exist, will be resolved," emphasized Faz Mora. He added that political party representatives will be granted access to all polling station records starting from June 4th. Consequently, if anomalies are detected, a recount will be conducted at those specific polling stations.
Xóchitl Gálvez, from Fuerza y Corazón por México, and Marko Cortés, National Leader, PAN, have criticized INE since there are differences between the records of each polling place and the preliminary results. The coalition has announced that it will challenge the election results and has demanded INE to review 80% of the polling stations.
Alejandro Moreno, Leader, PRI, said that if more irregularities are found they will ask for 100% of the ballot boxes to be recounted. "We need transparency and clarity in this election. We need to have certainty of what happened on June 2 and that every vote counts," Moreno said.
