Judicial Strike Ends. President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated the decision by federal judges and magistrates to lift the nearly two-month suspension of activities.
The National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges announced that operations will resume on Oct. 16. The strike, which began in August, was triggered when court employees symbolically shut down judicial offices in at least 16 states to protest against the judicial reform.
Judicial Reform. Interior Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez defended the use of a lottery system to select the first group of judges and magistrates whose positions will be filled by popular vote in 2025.
The draw determined 464 circuit magistrates and 386 district judges who will participate in next year’s elections. Lawmakers from Movimiento Ciudadano and PAN boycotted the event in protest of the reform. Simultaneously, workers gathered outside the legislative building, protesting with banners and chants against the changes to the judiciary.
National Housing Program. Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to expand housing options through the National Housing and Regularization Program. She highlighted that property prices for beneficiaries will range between MX$700,000 and MX$1.2 million. The standard units will measure 60m2, although smaller apartments—designed specifically for students—will also be available.
