Ignacio Mier, Leader of MORENA, Chamber of Deputies, announced that the first two amendments to the judicial reform involve the restructuring of the Supreme Court and the process for appointing ministers, judges, and magistrates. These amendments will be presented on Aug. 8 during the final open forum on the constitutional reform. Mier highlighted that these changes aim to address ongoing concerns and suggestions from previous forums, such as ensuring that all candidates for judicial positions meet the required qualifications.
“The goal is to ensure that all candidates, regardless of gender, meet the necessary criteria through a specialized committee of experts in justice administration. This committee will assess candidates through interviews, tests, and other evaluations to determine the most qualified individuals based on their academic credentials, personal attributes, and life experience. Current judges will also have the opportunity to participate in this process,” Mier explained.
Previously, López Obrador and Claudia Sheinbaum reached an agreement to initiate Plan C in September, coinciding with the change of deputies and senators in Congress. It is anticipated that MORENA and its allies will collectively hold between 346 and 380 of the 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, which would give them a qualified majority to easily pass reforms. In the Senate, MORENA and its allies are anticipated to secure between 76 and 88 of the 128 seats, leaving uncertainty regarding whether they will reach a qualified majority. Nonetheless, experts emphasize that even if they fall short, they will likely seek alliances with the opposition to advance their agenda.
