New Reform to Safeguard Mexico’s Sovereignty. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a constitutional reform initiative for Art. 19, which she will submit to Congress today, aimed at safeguarding Mexico from foreign interference. She emphasized that the reforms will enhance cooperation between Mexico and the United States while ensuring that all international collaboration ventures respect national sovereignty and uphold Mexico’s autonomy.

“Any national or foreign individual involved in the unlawful manufacture, distribution, sale, transportation, or entry of weapons into Mexican territory, as well as any foreigner engaged in illegal activities related to the second and third paragraphs of Art. 40 of this Constitution, will face the most severe penalties, including mandatory pretrial detention,” the proposal states.

Mexican Cartels. Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the designation of Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations was a unilateral decision by the US government under Donald Trump, made without prior consultation with Mexico. "The classification of criminal groups in Mexico, commonly known as cartels, as terrorist organizations, was a decision made solely by the United States. It was not a matter they discussed with us."

The US Department of State announced it will classify the Sinaloa, Noreste, Jalisco Nueva Generación, La Familia Michoacana, and Cárteles Unidos as terrorist organizations, according to The New York Times. In addition to the designation, Gregory Guillot, Head, US Northern Command, confirmed that the US military has ramped up its surveillance of Mexican cartels. “We have enhanced certain military capabilities to track the cartels fueling illegal migration, primarily through advanced technology to improve intelligence gathering and develop countermeasures,” he stated. Guillot also reported that 5,000 US troops are currently stationed along the Mexico-US border.

Netflix Expands Investment in Mexico. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos announced a US$1 billion investment in Mexico over the next four years to produce series and films. As part of this initiative, the streaming giant plans to develop 20 productions annually in collaboration with local companies.

Sarandos emphasized Mexico’s “special place in Netflix’s history” and revealed that a documentary about legendary singer Juan Gabriel will premiere soon. He also highlighted the global success of Mexican-produced titles such as Club de Cuervos and Roma. Additionally, Netflix will partner with Estudios Churubusco to upgrade its facilities, reinforcing its long-term commitment to strengthening Mexico’s film and television industry.
